Thomas Schaaf
Principal research scientist, 3M Health Information Systems
Dr. Thomas Schaaf is a principal research scientist at 3M. His research interests are focused on combining Automatic Speech Recognition and Natural Language Understanding. He received his Dr. Ing. from the Universität Karlsruhe (Germany) in 2004 and worked at Sony (Stuttgart, Germany), Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA), Toshiba (Cambridge, UK), Amazon (Pittsburgh, USA), and M*Modal (Pittsburgh, USA). He joined 3M in 2019 through the acquisition of M*Modal. There he researches machine understanding of patient-doctor conversations to reduce the burden of the documentation process on doctors to create more time to care. He is also adjunct faculty at the Language Technology Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. Thomas enjoys hiking and playing board games with friends and family.
