Alessandra Di Maio is a senior health economist within the Italian 3M HIS organization since 2003. She is an expert in hospital case-mix systems (e.g. DRG CMS, APR-DRG) and related performance/quality indicators based on severity of illness, risk of mortality, potentially preventable readmissions and complications. She has developed and supervised projects on hospital inpatient costs for Italian regional governments and the Italian Ministry of Health. In the last 5 years, she has been promoting Clinical Risk Groups (CRG) and preventables (PPR, PPC) in Italy and has supported pilot studies and projects on population-based health classification systems. With her background in economic evaluation of health care technologies, services, costs and outcome she has published several articles on health economics in Italy and other western European countries and held university lectures (Rome and Milan) on these topics.
